Coimbra. Watchtower of the city wall (Torre da Muralha)

From Montego Park, I headed up the Rua alegria, which runs up from the waterfront, toward the University. Commercial center "Galeria Topazio" (Galerias Topazio on the map).

A little further on, you can see an old factory building.

Behind it-authentic houses of the mid-late 19th century.

Here I also found a staircase that goes steeply up (on the map). I checked the map and decided this was my way. The stairway was very steep and there was no end in sight, so I very quickly repented of my decision.

Наконец, на подгибающихся ногах,  я взобрался на верхнюю ступеньку лестницы

и оказался на Лиссабонском проезде (Rua da Couraça Lisboa). Открывшаяся передо мной панорама долины реки Мондегу заставила забыть о тяготах крутого подъема.

Рядом сохранился небольшой участок средневековой городской стены.

The wall facing the Montego river had at least three towers (Torre da Muralha on the map). Subsequently, one of the towers was transformed from a defensive tower into an observation tower, and the other two towers, located below the current Botanical garden, were enclosed with buildings.

Another staircase-lane, no longer so steep and endless, led me to the Street of doctor Moreira (Rua Doutor Guilherme Moreira), which goes straight to the University square Paço das Escolas.

San Antonio Pedreira school (College Santo António da Pedreira on the map it was founded in 1602 by Franciscan monks. In 1834, in connection with the abolition of monasteries, the building became the property of the state and a shelter for homeless and underprivileged children was opened in it. This institution is still functioning today. The chapel, which belonged to the College, has preserved the decoration of the 17th century - tiled panels on the walls, wooden sculptures and paintings by fanziscan artists. Unfortunately, it was not possible to get acquainted with the interior of the chapel, there is no information about the possibility of visiting it.
